Essential Travel Guide: Kruger to Cape
Packing & Dress Code
What to Pack & Safari Dress CodeDressing for the Bush and the Coast
A "Kruger to Cape" trip brings massive weather changes. A morning game drive in the bush can be freezing, while afternoon wine tastings in the Cape can be beautifully hot. Packing in layers is your secret to comfort. The Essential Packing Checklist:• The Safari Layer System: Pack a windproof jacket, a warm fleece, and light t-shirts. Early morning open-vehicle game drives are incredibly chilly, but you will want to peel layers off as the sun heats up.• Neutral Colors: For wildlife viewing, pack neutral tones like khaki, olive green, beige, or grey. Avoid bright whites (makes you stand out to animals) and dark blue or black (which can attract insects like tsetse flies in certain bush areas).• Footwear: You do not need heavy, military-grade hiking boots. A sturdy, comfortable pair of closed walking sneakers is perfect for all standard tours and light bush walks.• Daily Essentials: A wide-brimmed sun hat, polarized sunglasses, high-SPF sunscreen, and insect repellent. If visiting Kruger in summer, consult your doctor about malaria prophylactics.
Flights & LogisticsFlight Booking & Smart LogisticsNavigating Flights to the Tip of Africa
Getting here is half the adventure. Booking the right flight paths can save you hours of exhausting airport layovers and hundreds of dollars.
Expert Flight Tips:
Our personal recommendation is "Cheap Flights"• International Hubs: Look for flights landing directly at OR Tambo International (Johannesburg) or Cape Town International. Booking 4 to 6 months in advance generally yields the best rates.• Smart Domestic Hops: To maximize your vacation time, fly between regions rather than driving for days. For example, local carriers offer quick, affordable flights from Cape Town straight to Kruger-area airports like Mpumalanga (MQP) or Hoedspruit (HDS).• Watch the Luggage Limits: Main international flights allow heavy luggage, but local domestic airlines (like FlySafair or Airlink) have stricter weight limits (typically 20kg/44lbs for checked bags). If you are taking a tiny charter flight directly into a safari bush airstrip, you must pack in a soft-sided duffel bag, as hard suitcases will not fit in the aircraft luggage compartments.
